Ten’on-zan Gohyaku Rakanji was established in 1695.
This temple is well-known as the birthplace of the “Rakan” belief.
Under the patronage of Shogun, the temple was prospered with many visitors.
Sho’un Genkei has carved all of the wooden statues of Rakan and Buddha through 1691 – 1710 alone.
These statues are designated as the “ Important Cultural Properties of Tokyo”(305 statues as of 2017).
However, the temple started declining after the Meiji Restoration and the statues were kept badly.
In 1979 Hidaka Munetoshi, the chief priest, stood up to restore the historical temple.
He has finally reconstructed present facilities.
Now Gohyaku Rakanji has reborn as the “beloved temple filled with statues of Rakan” both in name and in reality.
